Valora
I shot the rings for Valora, a jeweler, for its Valentine's Day campaign.
The context
A ring for
a proposal
Valora is a jeweler and wanted photos for its Valentine's Day campaign, with engagement rings and promise rings. People often buy jewelry like that on emotion, on impulse, so the photo had to create that urge before any talk about price.
See it live
The challenge
Polished metal
reflects it all
Rings are hard to shoot. Polished metal and stones catch every light, and one reflection too many wipes out the texture of the piece. The photos also needed a Valentine's mood without the set getting more interesting than the ring.
What I did
Everything red
but the ring
I decided the ring would be the center of every photo, with the set only there to support it. Red, already the color of the holiday, became the background and the mood of the whole series. The sets use satin, velvet and rose petals on a dark background for depth, and the framing closes in on the sparkle of the stone and the shape of the band.
The outcome
Fifteen photos
in one week
I shot 15 photos for the campaign on three different sets, all with the ring in the center and red around it. Everything was done in one week.

In one line
“Bad photos make fine jewelry look cheap. In Valora's shoot, your eye lands on the ring before anything else.”
