Toothbar (Austin, TX)
I built the site for Toothbar, a five-dentist office in downtown Austin. The site carries the same mood as the office and loads fast on a phone.
The context
A dental office
that feels like a hotel
Toothbar opened in downtown Austin in 2018, designed like a hotel lounge: 15-foot windows, a refreshment bar and the city in view from the chair. In 2019 it won the American Dental Association's Design Innovation Award. Five dentists, a 4.9 Google rating and more than 700 reviews.
See it live
The challenge
The first impression
showed up late
Their site took more than 8 seconds to show the first image on a phone, and Google scored its performance at 52. For an office that sells an experience, the first impression arrived late.
What I did
A menu,
not a list
The site opens on the brand film, a doctor walking into the office. Services became a menu, from the six-month checkup to porcelain veneers, each with a short name and a one-line explanation. I carried over everything from their site, the 14 services, the 5 doctors and the partners, to the same addresses, so nothing already showing on Google gets lost.
The outcome
As quick as
the care
On mobile, the performance score went from 52 to 94. Someone looking for a dentist in downtown Austin opens the site and sees the space, the Google rating and the booking button right away.

In one line
“An office that won a design award can't have a site that takes 8 seconds to open.”
